The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opened in 1937 and was partially funded by Hollywood stars Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien, Gary Cooper, Joe E. Brown, Charles S. Howard and Oliver Hardy. The second largest horse racing venue in the United States, the Del Mar Racetrack has a capacity of 44,000 and sells out annually during the thoroughbred racing season (from late July to early September and November/December). The track turf is a mixture of Common Bermuda and Hybrid Bermuda and has a one-mile oval.
The Del Mar Racetrack also has two premium clubs, the Turf Club and the Saddle Club. Nearby the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club inside the Del Mar Fairgrounds is the Surfside Race Place, which is one of the nations largest and most prestigious off-track betting facilities. The facility features live wagering on simulcasts horse races on over 1000 televisions, meaning race fans can bet by satellite on races at such tracks as Arlington Park, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita, Los Alamitos, Belmont Park, Kentucky Downs, Meadowlands, Saratoga and others. The Hilton San Diego/Del Mar is located directly across the street from the Del Mar Racetrack making it easy to visitors to stay and play during the thoroughbred-racing season.
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is also home to concerts, exhibits, shows, and events. Between July and September the tracks hosts a Friday Night Concerts series, which are free with paid admission to the track. Every Saturday and Sunday is Family Fun Day, where infield tickets are offered at a discounted rate.
